Benahavis information
This small town nestled in a batch of very rolling hills (La Serrania de Ronda Mountains) makes it a delight to trek around on foot, especially with the challenge of the looming mountain nearby (see map of Benahavis). Montemayor ("largest hill") not only is a nice climb to see the town and over 100km of coastland, but also lends its name to the Moorish castle. The village is rich in Arabic history, supposedly named after the Berber tribe and ruler Havis who reigned in the Montemayor Castle.
Not unlike other Andalusian villages, Benahavis is home to a number of luscious golf courses, putting it in line with many other top Costa del Sol golfing destinations. However, golf is always secondary to Benahavis' legendary reputation for gastronomy. Among other names, it has been called the "gastronomic corner of Andalucia" and the "dining room of the Costa del Sol" for its abundance of bars and restaurants.
